Holding Two Truths
FIFA May Be the Most Disingenuous Organization in the World, and I Will Watch Every World Cup Match
In the past I have written about Cross-Pressures — things that pull leaders in opposite directions. A cross-pressure is where we are supposed to do two things, and if we do one we can’t do the other. If we choose one option, we might get vilified or cancelled for not doing the second.
I have also written about the importance of holding two truths — today is tough, but tomorrow will be better. Systems Leaders can live with the ambiguity of today’s world knowing that things will change over time and will eventually improve.
My current Two Truths:
Truth #1: FIFA is an organization plagued by corruption, insider dealing, and questionable ethics. No one will likely ever study FIFA as a well-run organization and paragon of virtue.
Truth #2: I love the World Cup. I love everything about it. And I will watch every game that I can.
The Elephant in the Room
Ok, let’s dispose of the obvious: Other than the IOC, is there an organization with more questionable ethics than FIFA?
Sepp Blatter has been banned until 2028, even though he was acquitted in 2022 of bribery accusations. His corruption was legendary. And the process for awarding the World Cup tournament has been “controversial” to say the least.
And given the huge revenues of the tournament, the €13 billion budget has come under increased scrutiny. This includes looking at the cost of tickets as well as ancillary expenses such as parking and transportation for fans.
And don’t get me started on the “peace prize” recently given out. I mean, let’s face it — this is a game — not geopolitics. Actions like this performative event undermine our faith in institutions. It is an example of unserious behavior in a serious world. And everyone sees through the act.
And that assertion has nothing to do with one’s political views.
Yes, But…
Right now, my Instagram feed is the best. Many reels of fans from so many nations, of great goals, of the players and what the tournament means to them and their families. I love seeing the players from all over the world representing their countries, and the emotion that comes with the beautiful game.
I get chills when I watch the Nike and Adidas ads.
I believe that we will win is the energy the fans bring.
I believe that we will win is what the USMNT hears from the stands.
Every four years. I just love this.
LFG.

You are an honest FANBOY.
Enjoy your sport.
BUT the corruption is despicable and all the more so for a sport that can literally be played by any child with access to a flat bit of earth and a ball.
LFG! I put something like this on LinkedIn recently, but you said it much better. The dissonance is real.
I love that my son is taking me to a game in Seattle. I hate that it is not the US match because the prices were prohibitive for the cheapest tickets. (We are seeing Egypt vs Belgium.)
I will, however, be attending as many watch parties as I can with our new USL 1 team, Sporting Cascades, which will begin league play this fall.
